Pehchaan: Crafting Identity for Kosala’s Co-creators
All Kosala Diaries

Craft is not just an art; it is a language of heritage, a reflection of identity passed down through generations. In India, where traditions are stitched into the very fabric of society, craftsmanship is more than a skill—it is a testament to resilience and becomes the very (pehchaan) identity of communities. It tells the story of those who have preserved their ancestral art against all odds, ensuring that their legacy continues to thrive.

The Unseen Custodians of Kosa Silk

For generations, the identity of Kosa silk saree weavers remained in the shadows. The Dewangan weavers, once the custodians of this exquisite craft, were reduced to mere wage earners, working under middlemen and traders who stripped them of recognition and agency. Their skilled hands, capable of weaving intricate patterns, were seen only as tools, while their stories remained unheard. Yet, within every weave lay a rich legacy, waiting to be acknowledged and celebrated.

The Hands That Weave

At Kosala, we believe that craftsmanship belongs to those who create it—the artisans, the silent custodians of tradition. Every single pure Kosa silk saree is the result of a collective effort, shaped by the many hands that bring it to life: the silk producers who cultivate the finest threads, the dyers who infuse them with vibrant hues, the reelers, weavers, and tassel-makers who complete the intricate process. To us, Kosa silk is more than a textile; it is a cultural expression, a living art form passed down through generations. As our artisans move forward, they are no longer just weavers—they are storytellers, preserving heritage with every thread.

Empowering Weavers Through KASUY

Through initiatives like the Kosala Artisan Shilp Unnati Yojana (KASUY), we stand with these weavers, helping them reclaim their rightful place in the world of craftsmanship. Every year, as Holi approaches, we celebrate the Shilp Unnati Samaroh, an occasion that honours their dedication and unparalleled skill, ensuring that their craft—and their legacy—continues to thrive.

"I take pride in the challenge of my craft. Though my weaves are intricate and time-consuming, I find deep joy in my work, especially knowing I can create slowly from the comfort of my home. The Kosala Bhushan award has brought me significant recognition within my community, and I hope it encourages others to carry forward our cherished tradition."

The Prestigious Kosala Bhushan Award

At the core of this celebration is the esteemed Kosala Bhushan Award, a mark of distinction that recognises weavers who have not only mastered their craft but have also played a vital role in preserving and advancing Kosa silk. Beyond mere recognition, this award provides meaningful support—enhanced looms and tools, social security for artisans and their families, and annual incentives to ensure their financial stability. Most importantly, it reinstates their status as master weavers, restoring the dignity and pride they rightfully deserve.

Recognising Excellence in FY 2024

In FY 2024, Kosala proudly bestowed the Kosala Bhushan Award upon four distinguished weavers from the Dewangan community:

"I am overjoyed that Kosala is bringing our craft and our voices to the world, allowing others to experience and cherish them. This visibility is a wonderful opportunity for Dewangan and our rich traditional heritage to shine’’.

Pehchaan: Celebrating Craft and Identity

On this journey with Pehchaan, we honour not just the craftsmanship but also the artisans—their stories, challenges, and victories. The handloom silk sarees crafted by our artisans are more than just fabrics—they are a testament to their pehchaan, carrying forward a legacy of tradition, skill, and cultural identity in every weave. Each Kosala product carries the essence of numerous artisans, whose identities deserve to be seen, acknowledged, and valued.
